department ensuring all staff are up
to date with DTS reviews and CPD. • Additional duties - planning of AT for the department and Mess Treasurer.
I applied to be assigned to this role after three years of working alongside medics
in the Training Management Department (TMD), two years of being a course manager for Common Core Medics, and one year
of running Common Core placements cell, for all 3 services, and hospital attachments for the Royal Navy. I felt that working in the Defence Academy Arena made me aware of the dynamics and the role I was applying for.
My current role as Instructor for ALDP
is divided between Cpl and Sgt promotion courses, teaching on both with the lessons covering all aspects of leadership and management within each rank. These lessons vary from welfare management
and mental fitness to combat estimate and orders, with the courses including both formative and summative assessments. The Junior Military Qualification Course (JMQC) has an exercise phase which tests the Cpls on Command and Control of a section. They are tested on all areas of the exercise from being a section commander to part of the section taking instruction. It can be an arduous exercise, but the Cpls always come out of it feeling accomplished and proud of their knowledge gained. That can be the most fulfilling part of being an instructor
in this role, seeing a Cpl gain confidence
on the course in their military skills and command.
Being able to be in this role as part of the RADC is a real privilege and showcases the RADC in jobs alongside other AMS cap badges. Also, being able to use my other skills as a Dental Nurse to teach on other courses is helpful to this multifunctional role within the Phase 3 department DMA(W).
I was originally posted to the Dental School as an instructor, but as they already had a PO and an RAF Sgt, I was redeployed within the school. This different role has given me a massive insight into the wider AMS arena, I’ve learned and gained so
much knowledge outside of the RADC whilst still using my skills gained within PM roles. The role definitely made me utilise the full capacity of being a Sgt, from welfare to organising and managing over 600 medic placements all over the DPHC and Overseas, to now using my experience to teach the future Cpls and Sgts of the AMS.

Training is very critical in any organisation but more so in the military as we aim to produce and bring out the best in our individuals. The Dental Training School is no different, this is where it all begins for our professional Dental Nurses.
I first fell in love with teaching and management when I did my Intermediate Practice Managers course, formerly the Joint Practice Managers Course (JDPM). The instructors were exceptional. From this experience, I knew I wanted to teach.
Hence, throughout my career, I
worked consistently on my personal and professional development; I was intent on gaining an extensive amount of experience in management and teaching. As a result,
I have taken courses in Defence Train
the Trainer (DTTT) and also in Level 5 in Management. In addition, as part of my continuous professional development, I taught Mental Health First Aid, MATT 3, BLS and AED to the units I’ve been located with and RADC Personnel.
In June 2019, I was selected for the
rank of Sgt and the Course Manager for the Dental Training School was the only available position. Although I had all the criteria needed and was chosen for this position, this wasn’t by coincidence. This all happened because I had a goal in mind; even though it seemed like an impossible dream at times, I never gave up and just kept preparing. One thing I have learnt from this is never to give up on your dreams, it may seem impossible to others, and even yourself on occasions, but always remain focus on achieving your dreams.
