critical, not only whilst on PT, in PT kit, but during all training activity. To ensure our recruits receive continuous education that remains within, is challenging. To combat this, Training Team NCOs are included in our training delivery, they have a broad understanding of our training methods, and they routinely practice our theories affording them the opportunity to inform the recruit(s) on ways to embed the culture that sees them have a Mens Sana In Corpore Sano – this is viewed positively.

With the introduction of CMS 18 and the new PES testing, we had to consider if ATC Pirbright’s P&RTC had enough equipment and the correct infrastructure to deliver and sustain these new physical activities. After much deliberation and rationalisation, it was decided that an upgrade was needed, and it would come in two phases.
Phase one was to produce a bespoke resistance training area, this had to have enough equipment to conduct lessons for two Troops of up to 48 Recruits. Techno-Gym were called upon to provide plans for a bespoke suite that would give us a space that would facilitate both Recruits and Permanent Staff alike. After months of planning, it all took shape very fast and we were soon up and running.
With an entire basketball court size gym now converted, we have plenty of room to facilitate CMS 18, the gym contains a large number of movable squat racks, five lifting platforms, a Beaver frame and enough weight plates to sink a large ship. This new area has been greatly received by everyone who uses it and has inspired soldiers to change the way they train in order to make the most of the new facilities.
Phase two of the upgrade was the completion of a long-term project, a new running track. This project has taken a long time

to complete but was very much needed. The old track was worn beyond repair and looked tired, not the most inspiring place to conduct training.
On the 4th September Major General Paul Nanson CBE, General Officer Commanding, ARITC opened the track whilst also starting the first race of the Pirbright athletics competition. An exceptional event that saw competitors from all three Regiments compete to be crowned champions of the Commanding Officer’s Cup.
With these two upgrades complete, and being fully utilised at every opportunity, we are looking forward to the future and how we can continue to develop our facilities to ensure the highest standard of training can be facilitated. We aim to create an environment that inspires recruits and soldiers to push themselves beyond their perceived limits and develop skills whilst collectively striving for excellence.
