ADVENTURE TRAINING
HEADQUARTERS ADVENTUROUS TRAINING GROUP (ARMY)
Maj (MAA) G Logan RAPTC
After two fantastic years at HQ RAPTC, I packed up my desk in preparation for a return to the Adventurous Training arena. However, this time it was different - I was not heading North to the delivery space, but South West to HQ ATG(A) in Upavon to assume the SO2 Group Training Officer role. HQ ATG(A) is an OF5 (Col Neil Wilson late RA) lead organisation and subordinate to HQ Army Recruiting and Initial Training Command. We are the Training Delivery Authority (TDA) for Joint Service Adventurous Training foundation, leader and instructor courses within the Army, which is managed by our delivery providers; Adventurous Training Foundation Centre and Joint Service Mountain Training Centre and their associated delivery wings. In addition to course delivery

we also provide support to unit expeditions via our network of Adventurous Training Desk Officers, clothing and equipment via Loan Pool 29 and our lodge facilities in Germany; located in Bavaria and the Hartz Mountains respectively.
As a headquarters our outputs are varied and encompass the full spectrum of the G1-9 functions. Over the past eleven months the headquarters has undergone significant restructuring, which has lead to the creation and recruitment of a number of key positions including a DCOS, SO2 G1/G8 and SO3 Learning Development Advisor; ex-RAPTCI now Capt Aaron Wilson ETS. This has resulted in a streamlining of processes, which in turn has enabled the headquarters to increase support to its units and the wider Army. In addition to providing circa 8,000 course places per annum and support to circa 1,100 expeditions (30,000 personnel), we also provide wider AT assurance support to the Field Army, other single Services and adaptive adventurous training support to Defence.
Demand for challenging adventurous training in the Army remains high and provides a medium by which to develop service personnel leadership and resilience attributes, to name but a few. Additionally, it is part of the ‘offer’ and as one Officer commented recently to CGS’ Briefing Team ‘removing the opportunity to participate in adventurous training would be the equivalent to a pay cut’.
In closing, ATG(A) is at the leading edge of Adventurous Training and in particular in Adventurous Leadership and Resilience Training (ALeRT). Our dedicated instructors, administrative and support staff are always available to advise and support RAPTCIs and the Chain of Command on the delivery of unit led adventurous training.
