The JSSERI is a phase 3 training establishment which qualifies up to 40 Single Service Exercise Rehabilitation Instructors annually from the RAPTC, RAF, Royal Navy and Royal Marines.
Each student undertakes an academic journey with the commencement of a foundation module; designed to provide a broader understanding of the underpinning framework of exercise rehabilitation and upskill the participant to a competency required to critically analyse evidence and utilise concepts and theories originating in applied physiology, clinical anatomy, kinesiology and exercise therapy. The Foundation module culminates with a Force Development period to the nation’s capital which aims to instil the historical significance of the ERI role.
The student then enters the initial specialist clinical module which focuses exclusively on the lower limb. Students are exposed to clinical anatomy, kinesiology and exercise therapy techniques, drawn from sports therapy, strength and conditioning and biomechanics. The module concludes with over 100 hours of clinical placement to confirm understanding and expose students to live clinical scenarios. On return from their one-week well- earned leave, the students enter the second and third specialist clinical modules with attention now attuned to the spine and upper limb. Again, each module is complemented with over 100 hours of clinical placement per specialist clinical module. On return from clinical placement the student is fully prepared to enter the final examinations of the course, where, the successful participant will graduate and take up role at a primary, secondary or tertiary care facility specific to their Single Service requirement.
The RAPTC currently fulfils 2 significant appointments at the JSSERI. The Training Warrant Officer is currently held by WO1 (SMI) Arthur RAPTC; as the course manager the appointment is responsible for design, management and facilitation of the 6-month training programme in addition to constructing each courses university electronic learning platforms. The second appointment is the Army Tutor, the appointment requires the individual to have achieved a minimum of a BSc in an area of sports science (ideally undertaking studies towards an MSc in a similar area). The role is responsible for the implementation of the latest research and delivery of Exercise Therapy across all modules, additionally the appointment is afforded the opportunity to undertake a PGCE during the tour of duty.
In Dec 2019 the JSSERI aligned with Birmingham City University to establish a Level 6 accreditation (BSc equivalent). On successful completion of the 6-month intensive course each student will be awarded a level 6 qualification in Defence Exercise Rehabilitation.
On a personal note my tenure as the Army Tutor at the JSSERI has provided an opportunity to appreciate how civilian academic institutions construct and deliver training to a level 6 standard and beyond. The PGCE enables the practitioner to delve further into educational pathways and assist in advancing delivery capability. The Army Tutor role is an extremely satisfying job which I recommend to any RAPTCI wishing to advance academically or from a teaching perspective.
