REGIONAL REHABILITATION UNIT (RRU) ST ATHAN
As last year ended so this year picked up the ongoing debate on the future leasing agreements surrounding MOD St Athan.
With that said the RRU has continued in the same vein of exemplary delivery of exercise rehabilitation to a diverse and unique PAR. Having adopted a trickle feed admission model for both general course streams admissions onto the RRU residential course has increased over the past year. With admissions now weekly it allows greater flexibility for referring clinicians and patients to ‘pick and choose’ when the course best fits the needs of the patients. This has also seen a decrease in waiting times for both in and out patients through the year.
Implementation of elements from the Defence Occupational Fitness Programme (DOFit) has been to date well received, though the content is under constant review from the DHWA’s SSgt (SSI) Jonny Gray and Mr Chris Blake. The DOFit content is currently being delivered to all patients attending a residential rehabilitation course admission as the content is relevant to all in patients irrelevant of their BCM risk status. The feedback thus far has been positive with patients expressing gratitude for help in understanding programming, goal setting and developing generally healthier relationships with exercise and nutrition.
The RRU has incorporated the PES framework into both education and delivery aspects of the course utilising similar terminology and where differing linking to PES as the overarching objective. This has enabled soldiers to understand where their individual exercises fit in to returning them to MFD status and how these may relate to role or function.
In other news, the RRU supported 160 X at the annual Royal Welsh Show with resounding success in raising awareness of the RAPTC and the importance of whole life health and fitness to the community.

The RRU has also supported local charities hosting the warrior games with CF Warriors Josh Llewellyn-Jones OBE; the event was a resounding success and in only its second year we raised £31,000 for Cystic Fibrosus.
