Wed 18 Sep 2019, was a momentous day for UK Armed Forces Weightlifting, due to the inaugural Inter Services Championships held at the ASPT.
The introduction of the Army Physical Training System (APTS), British Army Warrior Fitness (BAWF) competitions and other functional approaches to training, has made Weightlifting hugely popular in the Military.
The competition commenced with the lightweight
females’ categories; the Army Ladies produced some outstanding performances and took an early lead
in the competition. Next onto the platform were the lightweight males, the Army Team again showed their class with another strong performance.
Sgt (SI) Charlotte Spence carried on the momentum in the middleweight females’ group. A fantastic performance across both the snatch and clean and jerk, saw her set the standard for all 3 Services, winning Best lifter and setting the largest total of all within the female groups.
The final group was the male middleweight / heavyweight with the Army team, once again, setting the bar high and producing some fantastic results. Additionally, several lifters achieving qualifying totals for the British championships in 2020.
I have been involved in Weightlifting since 2007, having been fortunate to coach at International level; representing Wales at 2 x World Cups: the Celtic Championships and the Junior Battle.
As well as Coaching Olympic Weightlifting, I am an active Para Powerlifting coach and Technical Official. I have been involved in the sport since 2015 and was
delighted to be selected as a Technical Official, at the recent World Cup in Manchester. This is a major step forward, in my long term ambition of officiating at a Paralympic Games and was a fantastic experience.
At the time of writing this article, I am Coaching LCpl Brajshori (RE) in preparation for her attempt to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Also, several other Army Weightlifters who are hoping to qualify for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
