Over the past 12 months, rowing, both in the RAPTC and across the Army has developed significantly. The RAPTC rowing team have been at the fore of all these developments
ensuring we have a voice at the Army Committee discussing both Indoor and On-The-Water Rowing.
On-The-Water Rowing across the Army has had a turbulent 12 months, however, with the development of an Army development squad we are now seeing RAPTCIs competing not only for the RAPTC but for the Army. Sgt Coussens, our newest rower, took to rowing like a duck to water (sorry) and quickly joined the Army Dev squad along with WO2 Percival at their annual training camp and subsequently competed at the Joint Services Regatta taking home gold in the Novice Eight and Silver in the Men’s Double.
WO2 Percival was our first rower to qualify as a club coach which improves the coaching capability within our team.
Indoor Rowing is still growing at pace; the renaming of the Regional Command Indoor Rowing League to the Army Indoor Rowing League has been instrumental in its growth and we

are seeing more RAPTCIs taking up the sport, if not only as a secondary form of competition or fitness. For over 12 months, the RAPTC Rowing Committee have worked closely with British Rowing to try and create an indoor rowing coaching qualification to improve the coaching of Indoor Rowing across the Army. British Rowing were keen to assist and created an accredited workshop for Service Personnel who hold a L2 fitness qualification. Five RAPTCIs passed a British Rowing Master Trainer course and can now qualify other RAPTCIs as UKAF Go Row Indoor Trainers.
Competition wise, the RAPTC have continued to compete on the indoor scene at the Welsh, British and even the World Championships with lots of success. Of note, were six medals at the British, six at the Welsh and last but by no means least, Sgt Barrigan achieving Silver at the World Championships in the female 500m lightweight competition.
