Following almost 2 years in Kenya as the BATUK AT QMSI, I was looking forward to a move back to the UK and some ‘normality’. What was to follow was a position in our
headquarters within the TDT, which although very positive, has proven to be anything but normal. The work we undertake requires an analytical eye for detail with no one day ever being the same.
As the senior analyst, I’m primarily responsible for the management of all higher-level Army AT DSAT documentation and the External Validations (ExVal) process for all AT scheme courses. My role also has input and influence in other TDT working threads, which are many. Not being an ATI, being thrust into this position has been a fantastic experience, the knowledge and skills I’ve gained whilst in the HQ cannot be underestimated. The delivery of training is what we all do, so to understand the mechanics of why we do what we do, is really interesting and has added to my development hugely.
This year working alongside others, I’ve completed several ExVal threads, centralised all AT DSAT documentation to understand where we carry risk and refreshed some supporting documents, been involved in the procurement process for PTI clothing and started the process to put RAPTC CPD on a commercial footing, this offers an overview of TDT working threads.
Alongside the analysis / DSAT aspects, being in the Corps HQ has developed my awareness of what we as a Corps are working towards and it’s a great working environment. In addition to the above, I’m also responsible for the future roll out of RAPTC CPD, currently PMC for our Corps WOs’ & Sgts’ Mess and also involved in a variety of projects, which will no doubt be routine Corps business in the near future. The TDT lifestyle might not be for everyone, but it’s a great opportunity to develop and learn and experience how our Corps is progressing.
WO2 (QMSI) R Harnden RAPTC – Senior TDT Analyst
My first year in the department has flown past. After spending the first few months on a steep learning curve trying to understand the DSAT world, I can safely say
the curve has lessened and I am now more comfortable with this unique and complex process. Being within an experienced team has allowed me to learn and develop a lot and I now feel able to add real value to TDT and Corps HQ business.
My main role in TDT is an analyst for the Adventurous Training (AT) scheme. One of my primary roles is to conduct ExVal on the plethora of AT courses which are constantly being reviewed and improved, doing this ensures that the course training adequately prepares individuals for their role within the AT scheme. More recently we are reviewing all the AT DSAT documentation, to ensure that role and training resources are still fit for purpose. Understandably this has been a massive task but it’s giving me a level of knowledge and skills I wouldn’t have gained elsewhere in the Corps. Additionally, I have developed the PT content to be delivered on all LCpl to SNCO ALDP Military Training, developed aspects of the Corps’ social media, been involved with the Project 5 ‘Proof of Concept’ and just started another round of AT ExVals.
On a sporting front, this will be my second season as the RAPTC Cricket Secretary, the feedback received from my first season has been truly outstanding and I’m happy to report the passion for the game within the Corps is still alive. Looking forward to the 2020 season, I’ve championed a joint venture with the Int Corps and CAMUS to play competitive cricket at this year’s Inter-Corps T20 and One day competitions. Meanwhile the RAPTC Cricket team will still retain our identity for friendly fixtures.

A personal achievement this year has was been to lead a team of Referee officials in the Prince Albert Cup Final. Having only qualified as a referee in 2018 this would not have been possible without the support of the Army FA and the RAPTC TDT team allowing me to pursue this passion.
