Thirdly, we have just started work on a Lone Soldier mobile App. In a nutshell, we are digitalising the APTS. It will be fully interactive and contemporary, with programmes tailored to the user’s SCR score, availability of equipment to train, personal/physical restrictions and time away from unit/collective PT. The CoC and PD Staff will be able to monitor user’s compliance and adherence via a dashboard. Working closely with HQ RAPTC, we aim to introduce the App early in 2021. Long overdue, these are certainly exciting times as we look to fully embrace the use of technology to support the delivery of PT.
Finally, outside of policy development, Prof Dev found time to undertake some Adventurous Training (AT) in Cornwall. My AT qualifications, gained back in 1997 (and yes it was harder in those days!), came to the fore. An enjoyable and most welcoming break from the Andover office grind of emails, meetings and daily Agile stand-ups!
So, on reflection, the last 12 months have felt somewhat like a 6-month tour, with some AT R&R thrown-in. But it has also been informative, educational and satisfying given the amount of change. Good news (apparently), I’ve been extended by 1 year... ..I’ll therefore put on hold (again) my Andover departure notes until the next MBS edition!

FIT TO FIGHT
NEW ANNUAL
PHYSICAL TEST
FOR NON-GROUND CLOSE COMBAT (GCC) PERSONNEL
IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY SERVING IN NON-GROUND CLOSE COMBAT CAP-BADGES, PLEASE READ THIS!!
DEVELOPMENTS SINCE THE LAST UPDATE
Since the last update the PES team (working with the University of Chichester), have been busy collecting and analysing Military Task data to help develop and inform a new suite of physical tests. Over the last 8 weeks, practical testing has taken place with 500 personnel (across all cap-badges) participating.
WHAT WILL THE NEW TESTS PROVIDE?
New tests will be legally defensible, role-related, gender free and underpinned by science. Standards will be specific to an individual’s employment and will form part of the MATT 2 requirement.
WHO WILL DECIDE THE STANDARDS?
Military Judgement Panels (MJPs) will ultimately decide the standards. MJPs consist
of military experts, civilian specialists and key stakeholders from across the Army. A total of six MJPs will take place up to Sep 20, providing assurance that the new tests and standards to be implemented are representative and fit for purpose.
WHEN WILL THE NEW TESTS BE IMPLEMENTED?
From Apr 2021, however, specific details are still to be published. An implementation programme will be issued in advance of Apr 2021. This programme will provide direction and guidance on the transition from old to new testing; allowing a period of time for units to prepare, any additional testing equipment to arrive and for rehearsals to take place
NEXT STEPS?
We will continue to deliver key updates over the next 12 months which will provide further direction on Non-GCC PES progress. Future updates will follow in:
Update 3 - Jun/Jul 2020 - Confirmation of in-Service exercises and new tests.
Update 4 - Aug/Sep 2020 - Confirmation of training pathway standards (ie Basic Training). Implementation details.
