ARMY TRAINING REGIMENT WINCHESTER
WO2 (QMSI) C Goodchild RAPTC
Army Training Regiment Winchester (ATR (W))has had a very busy and successful year putting 45 Platoons through training using the CMS 18 programme. AAPTI’s at Winchester have excelled in this as well as performing extremely well in delivering a structured framework of Physical Training to the permanent staff using the Army Physical Training System (APTS).
This year was also a special one for Captain (MAA) Taylor RAPTC as he was notified of being awarded an MBE following the work, he completed with regards to Deployable Fitness Equipment.
Sporting Achievements. The Regiment was very proud to be able to host the first UK South British Army Warrior Fitness event of the season with great success seeing a total of 35 teams competing from across the region. The success of the event has seen a surge in the amount of personnel attending BAWF sessions across the Regiment.
ATR (W) has had an overall very successful sporting year, with various achievements worth celebrating. We have many talented sports personnel that continue to strive for success in both team and individual sports. To name some of the many good news stories that contributed towards the retention of the Army Sports Trophy (minor unit) winners, we had a 1st and 2nd place in the UK South Cross County League within the female and male categories. The Regimental Football Team (second division) also continued their success with wins in the Army Minor Units Cup and another 1st place.
ATR (W) also saw individual success with Cpl Leeson competing in the British Army Brazilian jujitsu male under 76kg white belt category, coming away with gold medals in both Gi and no Gi.
The success of the Regiments sporting activity is without doubt down to the commitment of our AAPTIs’ and RAPTCIs’. We actively encourage all PS to participate in as much sport as possible; building on so many positive attributes. Also proving to the recruits that they can represent their units in a wide variety
of sporting activities and levels, from beginner to elite, once they have passed their Basic Training.
Adventurous Training. Over the past year, AT has been very demanding, we’ve offered many more expeditions within our AT programme, delivering 11 different AT packages during 2019/20 with a further 7 planned for 2020/21. This commitment is down to the highly qualified and motivated staff currently based at ATR (W). For us to sustain this, we have also implemented in-house Distributed Training through formal climbing, canoe and mountain bike clubs. The PS can enrol onto any of the disciplines offered which will allow them to move onto further instructor / leader qualifications in the future. This in turn has improved the staff qualities and helped to enhance all expeditions during the training year. The organisation and delivery of AT has had a large positive effect on the Regiment with over 75% of PS participating in T2 or T3 AT during the last training year, with 24% receiving foundation qualifications.
Engagement / Charity Work. ATR (W) have also had the opportunity to welcome local schools and sports clubs as part of our community engagement programme in support of the recruitment campaign. Charity events have been a big part of the Regiment in the last 12 months one example being a 24hr on the hour every hour BAWF event which started with 52 individuals from across the Regiment and finished with only 6 completing the entire 24 hours. The event raised over £1,000.00 for Blind Veterans UK.
Gym Enhancement. Finally, the Regiment has worked hard to develop the Gymnasium into a state-of-the-art facility enabling all elements of the Army Physical
Training system to be utilised in
ATR Winchester.
