Coffee Roulette:
you may begin roasting your beans now

COFFEE ROULETTE WAS A social network developed by Cdr Alex Savage that ran for over 20 weeks during the course of the terms 1 and 2. Every week its members were paired at random and invited to join each other for half an hour of virtual coffee, chat,
information sharing, and gossip. For many these interactions were done through MS Teams or Zoom; for some, local pairings (lockdown conditions allowing) were the perfect excuse to get away from
the laptop and get out in the local villages and speak to someone face to face.
Over the course of terms 1 and 2
over 900 separate Coffee Roulette meetings were scheduled by Alex - a gargantuan force generation effort of its own, and one that the students hugely appreciated.
Networking, or the absence of it at the college, was one of the main gaps that students felt they were missing out on during the pandemic. Coffee Roulette was of huge benefit in helping to fill
this hole. I myself have benefited from meeting people that recognised themes
or issues in my DRP question that they knew they could help me with themselves or have put me
in contact with someone who could.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the mental strain
of everything that working from home
generated was difficult - but Coffee Roulette reminded us that talking with someone about it could help. We all shared a laugh when we heard the familiar sounds of frustrated children struggling with home-schooling in the background or the cheeky face looking to peer onto camera. At least during Coffee Roulette we could enjoy those moments together!
