REGIONAL ACTIVITY CENTRE
The last weekend of January saw a very active time for sixteen cadets from Mirfield, Batley and Dewsbury Squadrons, who enjoyed a residential camp at the Royal Air Force Air Cadets Regional Activity Centre at RAF Linton-on-Ouse.
Three Qualified Aerospace Instructor Cadets, with call signs 'Pizza Slice', 'Jeans' and 'Noot Noot', had been recruited to help run activities, along with Flight Lieutenant Peter Doubell and Civilian Instructor Matthew Thornton, from 868 (Mirfield) Squadron.
During the weekend they were hosted by Squadron Leader Kevin March, OC A Flight 72 Squadron RAF, who is a flying training instructor. He took the cadets to visit a Tucano Training aircraft which is what is currently used to train prospective fast jet pilots in the Royal Air Force. He gave then a good insight
into the aircraft and they all got to sit in the cockpit. Another flying instructor, Flight Lieutenant Kallmeier also gave the cadets a lively and informative talk about flying training in the RAF, and his own experiences.
Other activities over the weekend included training on flight simulators, learning to fly a planned route, and also taking control of an F16 and learning about combat flying in the Air Operations Acquaintance Centre. They were also taught something about aerodynamics and got to build a model glider out of cardboard and paper.
A lesson on presentation skills helped the cadets, in three groups, to prepare and present an Air Power plan for defending an RAF base in Cyprus, using

information they were able to research.
The inclusion of Leadership activities allowed
three cadets to also complete their Air Cadet Blue Foundation Leadership qualification, and the final team exercise of an egg drop competition was great fun, for all, including the supervising staff.
Overall, a good time was had by all!
Flt Lt Doubell later commented: “That was a busy, successful and enjoyable weekend, but an amazing opportunity for cadets who are fairly new to the organisation to get used to camp on an RAF Station, and a taste of some of the amazing activities that the cadets can experience in the world of Aerospace!”
