Recently, cadets from 868 (Mirfield) Squadron, Aiden Booth, Oscar Clayton, Matthew Devine, Emilia Drake and Toby Mathews, Sam Owen, Laila Robinson and Corporal Rebecca Thornton all had the opportunity to visit No. 9 Air Experience Flight at RAF Linton-on-Ouse. They were all gaining further experience towards achieving their Blue or Bronze Aviation Wings, which they are working towards later in the year!
After the preliminary safety briefing, they were all kitted out with flying suit, parachute and helmet ready for take-off to enjoy the opportunity to fly in the Grob Tutor aircraft, Emilia for the very first time.
Emilia reflected on her experience, saying: “Before we went flying, we had to watch a safety video and perform the safety procedure on a replica of the plane, then before we went into the aircraft we were kitted out with flying suit, gloves, sunglasses and a helmet with radio attached.
When I was in the plane my instructor asked if I would like to fly it. Flying the plane was easier than I expected and I found it quite fun – it has made me consider a career in flying. I also experienced G-force, the pilot performed a tight turn and explained that during the
turn my body weight would be double what it is on the ground. I enjoyed flying very much and I would like to go again and perform more aerobatics.”
This was a great experience for
the cadets. During their flights, the pilots demonstrated how the aircraft responds to the flying controls
and each all took charge of the
aircraft under the watchful eyes of the instructors and were able to fly through a series of manoeuvres in the air and even to experience aerobatics - Toby and Aiden even got to land their aircraft!
