BUCKINGHAM PALACE PRESENTATIONS
Outside the Palace
During May a golden opportunity appeared for members of 868 (Mirfield) Squadron Air Cadets,
it was a bright and sunny day and just right for a gathering in the gardens of Buckingham Palace, which is just what was in store for five young people who had completed their Gold level of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and all five are now taking their life and careers to new levels:
• Lauren Cargill, now a student at the University of Hull
• Miles Gilroy, now a member of the Royal Air Force
• Abbey Jacobsen-Jones, now in selection to be a
Police Officer
• Tom Jagger, a Civilian Instructor at the Squadron
• Matthew Smith, now a student at the University of
Manchester
Each was allowed to take one member of their family into the presentations, and everybody met up with squadron staff, Flight Lieutenant Peter and Mrs
Sue Doubell and Revd. Christine Shedd, outside the Palace before the ceremony.
It was a truly spectacular experience to be able
to walk around the gardens of Buckingham Palace
Gold Award Presentation events are always held
at the Royal Palaces, and in the summer months these are now usually in the gardens of Buckingham Palace which always help to make the day even more special, and members of the Royal family are always on hand for the presentations, this time the Earl and Countess of Wessex were joined by Princess Eugenie for the formalities. With some 1500 recipients attending during the day, a variety of celebrity guests are called upon to host manageable groups and,
on this occasion, they included: David Harewood, Rebecca Adlington, David Baddiel, Andy Serkis, Fern Britton, Martin Kemp, Ore Oduba and Sean Conway. The Air Cadets’ group was hosted by Mike Bannister, past chief pilot of the British Airways Concorde Fleet.
“It was a truly spectacular experience to be able to walk around the gardens of Buckingham Palace with my fellow Gold Award compatriots” said Miles Gilroy “and was something special to be able to see and speak to Princess Eugenie, an amazing reward for a worthwhile scheme!”
