CEY Wing ATC
3 OF THE BEST
FOR YORK SQUADRON
At the latest round of NCO interviews, 3 Cadet Flight Sergeants from 110 (City of York) Sqn Air Training Corps were rewarded with promotion to Cadet Warrant Officer, the highest rank attainable by a cadet in the Royal Air Force Air Cadets (RAFAC). For a Squadron to receive 3 CWO appointments is very rare, but even rarer still is having 3 appointed on the same day! The cadets were interviewed by the Wing Officer Commanding, Wing Commander Steve Wiggins, who thoroughly questioned them on their cadet careers, knowledge of the RAFAC and their future ambitions, both within the ATC and in their normal lives.
CWOs Harry East, Ross Peterson and Thomas Grieves joined in 2014, and have been progressing well as a team over the last 5 years, which has resulted in their highest achievement to date. All 3 were overjoyed to find out they had all passed the interviews, as they felt it would have been extremely awkward if one of them didn’t get the promotion.
Harry East is also Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for North Yorkshire, and has attended numerous functions in this role. He currently works at the Star in The City Restaurant in York, but is hoping to join the Royal
Air Force either as aircrew or air traffic control.
It’s great
to see the hard work and effort of the CWO team being appreciated by the Wing, and I’m extremely proud of all three
He originally had little interest in joining
the ATC but was encouraged by his father to attend, ultimately the right decision! His roles on the Squadron include assisting with Health and Safety, mentoring the NCO team and he is looking to expand into adventure training both at Squadron and Wing level.
Ross Peterson joined as he was interested in joining the military. He is currently studying A levels at Huntington 6th Form and after completion of his exams he is hoping to attend Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth to train to become a Royal Navy surface warfare officer. He also works at John Lewis as a Go To Partner and selling assistant, which he feels helps him to develop his leadership skills further. His favourite memory as a cadet was attending overseas camp at Gibraltar. His roles on the Squadron include teaching, organising junior NCO training and general drill and discipline.
At an early age, Thomas Grieves made a decision to follow in his granddad’s footsteps and join the military. To get a head start, he decided to join York Sqn. Thomas is also studying A levels at Huntington 6th Form, and works at Budgens in York as a sales assistant, and waits on at York Racecourse. He is highly active at Wing level, and is a member of the Wing Music team and Road marching teams. His favourite memory is attending the Nijmegen marches in Holland where he successful-
ly completed the166km route with the Wing team. On the Squadron, CWO Grieves helps
instruct navigation and Duke of Edinburgh's awards activities, and would like to get involved
with shooting at Wing level with elementary coaching and safety supervision.
Squadron Leader Jo Tucker, Officer Commanding
of 110 Sqn said of the new CWO team,
“It’s great to see the hard work and effort of the CWO team being appreciated by
the Wing, and I’m extremely proud of all three. They
all have very important
part to play at 110, and for them to get rewarded
with a Wing promotion reinforces their quality and commitment to the Corps.”

Harry East and Thomas Grieves
