Wing fieldcraft
Last year, Central and East Yorkshire Wing set up a stand-alone Fieldcraft team to roll out the new Fieldcraft syllabus that was to be introduced in January 2019.
The team, led by Sgt Joshua Hill, decided that the first priority was to update the Wing’s kit! After 5 days of deliveries in 24 large boxes, all thanks to the Wing Civilian Committee, this job was complete. The team now has the kit and capability to teach the new Fieldcraft training syllabus to 40 cadets per course.
A 4 phase progressive training programme has been constructed which will take cadets from knowing nothing about fieldcraft, all the way through to using weapons in the field with complex tactics.
Since the implementation of this structure, almost 200 cadets have passed through our Phase 1 Course. The latest course took place at the Wing Easter Camp held at Driffield CTC.
Cadets learned the basics of cooking in the field, camouflage and concealment, shelters, movement in the field, radio communications and stalking.
This training culminated in a night exercise in
which the cadets were dropped at a location and
had to make their way across the training area, completing numerous objectives which led to a casualty evacuation. This course was rather different for a couple of reasons; one being that this was the first time in around 10 years the wing had cadets sleep out in the field on a fieldcraft exercise and
the second that we had nearly 20 Sea Cadets on the Easter Camp marking the first of many joint training efforts between Cadet Forces within the Yorkshire Area.
