Battishorne Way Allotments, Honiton
On the 3rd June 2022, the Battishorne Way Allotments in Honiton were officially opened. Whilst still a work in progress, this was a milestone in the provision of allotments in Honiton.
Residents of Honiton had been waiting for allotments in Honiton since at least 2004 when the official waiting list was first put together. Honiton Town Council, with the assistance of the National Allotment Association, had tried on numerous occasions to secure suitable land for the provision of allotments, and whilst an allotment association was set up, all attempts unfortunately proved unsuccessful. However, in 2016, a local landowner agreed to lease a part of a field to the Council for the provision of allotments and the project started afresh. To
lead the project, the Council formed a working group that set about obtaining grant funding for the project, planning
permission and tendering for the work.
The assistance of Allan Cavill from the National Allotment Association proved invaluable with regards to achieving a 21st Century sustainable allotment site with Allan visiting personally at least on seven occasions to share his expertise. The patient residents of Honiton were advised that at last the project was being implemented and eventually work on building the allotments commenced in the summer of 2021. Once those works were completed, the residents
of Honiton had 36 plots which the Council allocated to those on the waiting list on a first come first served basis. Since then, those plotholders have been working hard to cultivate their plots and the site, which is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty,
is now well established. Whilst it has taken many years to come to fruition, at long last Honiton has some allotments
which it can be proud of. It is the case that there are, however, many still on the waiting list who would welcome the offer of an allotment and therefore the Council hopes in due course to secure additional land for a much needed and much appreciated asset to the town.
