January, was the occasion when the plough boys, employed on local farms, would go through the village with a plough, carrying scooped-out mangolds containing a lit candle, chanting “Remember the poor plough boys” – they were given money for their efforts.
Pear Tree Cottage was a Charity School for twelve local girls. The uniform was a brown dress, white apron and bonnet. In winter they wore a cloak, hood and tippet (a shoulder cape with hanging ends). The girls were taken to church on Sundays’ and, if their pinafores were clean, they were given a loaf of bread.
The vehicle above is Alfred Todd’s bakers’ delivery van in the 1910’s, he also ran a similar business in Barnwell and was also landlord of the Bell Inn. The lady making lace is one of the Belgian refugees from World War 1 who lived in a barn in the grounds of Mr Traynor’s house. The whole family are shown in the “Islip, 100 years recalled in photographs” by Allan Gray.
