                                CHARITY NEWS
Congratulations to the Rotary Club
The highlight of our recent activity has been the award of a Town Award for 2021 from Thrapston Town Council for services to the Community. Mike Turner, the club President, said he was delighted to receive the award
on behalf of club members who, along with members of other local rotary clubs, were helping out with car parking and queue marshaling at the vaccine centre at Nene
Valley Surgery. The club had also continued
to support the local food banks in Thrapston, Raunds and Irthlingborough and had provided almost 80 bowls of hyacinth bulbs to people in the club area.
The club has had a series of excellent speakers. The Rev. Debbie Hodge, a Rotarian and a Trustee of Wheelpower, the charity that owns the Stoke Mandeville Stadium, gave
a fascinating talk about transforming lives
by sport. Richard Bird gave an eye opening
talk based on Queen Victoria’s letters, which included fascinating details about life and attitudes at that time. Julian Winch talked about a Rotary visit to South West India, just prior to the pandemic, where the party visited a number of Rotary funded projects and enjoyed very good hospitality from local Rotary clubs. Julian, a member of Kettering Rotary Club, is now raising money to support some of the projects that he visited. More recently Keith Fossey, a member of Nene Valley Rotary Club, talked about the Swaziland Schools Project. This UK based charity is making a major difference to
schools in the country (now called eSwantini) by undertaking a wide range of projects including providing bursaries for vulnerable children from the poorest communities to attend school (which is fee paying from age
12), building and renovating classrooms, toilet blocks, kitchens, and teachers housing. The project also provides school lunches and water supplies, books, furniture for schools and training for volunteers who work in pre-schools.
Further details of the club and about Rotary can be found on the Thrapston and Raunds Rotary Club Facebook page.
