Horizontal rain and beautiful sunshine – it can only be England. Deciding against airport queues and European food, EX
LAKES CADET travelled to the beautiful Lake District where we tackled some of the highest peaks available. With Skiddaw bagged on day one, we were feeling rather confident going into day two, the mighty Helvellyn. Woefully under- dressed, from around the 300/400 metre mark we entered the clouds. The rain started lashing down, biting the skin due to the high wind. Our sweatshirts, and Mr Heywood’s chinos, were soon soaked through, but our spirits remained high. Despite the weather, we reached the top 20 minutes before our planned time of 1100hrs. The visibility did not increase, but the strength of the wind and rain had. We did not stick around for long; we all wanted to be out of the rain as quickly as possible!
That evening brought the great excitement of shaving Mr Toovey’s head, as he decided to finally succumb to the clutches of baldness with the quote: “If you can’t beat them, join them”. Day three was similarly disastrous in terms of

weather but we decided to set off anyway – Blen- cathra our goal. After the previous days’ activi- ties, we decided to not push our luck quite so hard, and so had to come down before reaching the summit. The final two days of our trip were dedicated to a beautiful overnight expedition to Buttermere Lake. Before setting off, we hoped that our Colour Sergeants would have been proud, to a degree, in the way that we carried out our kit checks before this overnight lakeside camping section! Fortunately for Mr. Heywood, we thought we couldn’t give out any show parades for missing items. We checked our maps and compasses, didn’t sync our watches, and were off. I think for everyone, this was the

most enjoyable part of our trip. We left after this overnight trip and returned home, with a journey long enough to reflect on what was a great week, spent tak- ing nice walks in the sun and rain and eating great food.
