running through the less glamorous minutiae of Adventurous Training (read: risk assessments). This laborious act allowed us to hit the ground running (or the wall climbing...) on our first morn- ing. We journeyed to the coast, and received a thrilling introduction to climbing by abseil- ing down the sea-cliffs of Neist – some took to it more naturally than others,
and some discovered that they possessed an extreme fear of heights, but all profited from the experience.
Day three introduced us to our
first taste of ‘proper’ ‘trad’ climb-
ing. After driving to the base of
the notorious Black Ciullin Hills,
we completed a multi-pitch route
up the Cioch – a feat that we unfortunately failed to repeat on the final day due to weather condi- tions. Our technique undoubtedly left a lot to be desired – given it was only our second day of climbing – but the effort to keep up was main- tained all round. Suffice to say, all Officer Cadets found something that they found mortally chal- lenging. As the day slid on, the departure of an oppressive cloud formation about the Cioch
revealed a startlingly beautiful view of the route we had followed to the base of the mountain, and the bay by which we had parked. Steeling our somewhat aching bodies, we proceeded to venture back to the van to undertake the long drive back to the accommodation. Finding our- selves drained, all of us collapsed at an astonish-
ingly (nay embarrassingly) early time. The local pub would have to manage without our presence... for this even- ing at least.
An hour’s drive and a thirty-minute hike led us to a remarkably isolated patch of land, jutting out into the bay with just a sliver of a connection to the mainland. After negotiating trou- blesome overhangs, manoeuvring
around a deeply impressive amount of seagull guano, and unsettling a large number of rocks from the routes, we climbed (thankfully avoid- ing injury to life and limb; pride, perhaps not so much), we all felt as though we were truly getting the hang of this climbing lark after all.
Just in time to enjoy a twelve-hour return to the Academy.
