Defence Engagement
This year’s Defence Engagement incorporated the Salamanca Band playing pop up jazz on the streets of the South Caucuses and two teams attending the Cambrian Patrol. It was a mixed year as the Battalion began the process of spreading the DE gospel beyond the boundaries of Bn HQ and into the companies. The Battalion carried out a Leadership study weekend where we incorpo- rated a war-game of the 2008 conflict in Georgia and were ably supported by Lt Col Retd Chris Langton a former DA to the S Caucuses who provided some ground truth having witnessed the aftermath and studied the conflict as an academic.
The Battalion deployed two teams to provide a heads up for the 2017 Cambrian Patrol, one to Georgia (Maj Toby Hood and LCpl Adkin) and one to Armenia Lt Dan Braycotton and Cpl Shaun Wilkes). Despite thorough briefings and practical advice when it came to the Welsh hills both teams struggled, underestimating the scale of the challenge and did not complete which was disap- pointing. At the time of writing the briefings for this year’s patrol have taken place with a Visit by Maj Owen and Colour Deeley in June and a greater focus on team selection and the psychology and
physical challenges of the patrol. We are hopeful for a better performance this year. The medics will once again deploy to Armenia which is becoming a firm favourite. We look forward to including their experiences in next year’s Bugle.
