Duke of Gloucester visits Lucton School
2018 is the 100th anniversary of the founding of a cadet corps at Lucton School, and the occasion was marked with a visit from HRH, Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who was guest of honour at Lucton Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Biennial Inspection.
The Duke, accompanied by Lady Darnley, Herefordshire’s Lord Lieutenant, Herefordshire’s High Sheriff and the Chairman of the County Council, was present throughout the event and took part fully in the inspection, a CCF group photo, laid a wreath at Lucton School’s First World War Memorial and also made presentations to staff and cadets. Military representatives included Brigadier Martin Vine, Maj. Gen. Edward Willmott, the County Cadet Colonel, Col. Andy Taylor, and the officer responsible for the inspection, Col. Kim Knutton of the West Midlands Brigade.
There are over 100 cadets at Lucton School and apart from the parade and inspection, guests were able to see them display their training at stands on the playing fields. These included Gold DofE Award expedition planning, first aid, camouflage, battlefield cooking, map skills and military training in built-up areas. The Duke and the other civic guests all stayed for lunch in Lucton’s Memorial Hall. Throughout the visit, the Duke took every opportunity to talk with Lucton’s pupils and at lunch, he sat between current pupil, Cadet Corporal Aaron Powell and Sergeant
Megan Griffiths, one of last year’s senior prefects. The weather was perfect and both Mrs Thorne, Lucton’s Headmistress, and Major Derrigan, Lucton’s CCF Contingent Commander, were delighted with the way everything went to plan. Everyone at Lucton contributed to a tremendously successful event and whilst we have yet to see the inspection report, early signs indicate that the inspecting officer, Col. Knutton, was very impressed
by the staff and cadets of Lucton’s CCF.
