As usual, the Duke of Edinburgh Award plays an important role in helping promote map and compass skills and field craft and this year has been no exception. The practice expeditions in October helped prepare the more inexperienced Bronze Award cadets for the more gruelling expedition to be done independently of staff in June. The week we chose happened to be the hottest of the year, so with a few extra water stops planned, we headed off with 49 cadets to complete their objective of navigating tricky terrain for 2, 3 or 4 days, for Bronze, Silver and Gold groups respectively. The final Gold wild campsite on the side of Fan Nedd in the Brecon Beacons was absolutely stunning, although, possibly not as good
as seeing the minibus at the pick-up point!

and guests. This year’s Guest Speaker was Col K Knutton Col Cadets 11 Sig & WM Bde. It is always nice to see cadets rewarded for their hard work either with awards or promotions, and this year was no exception, with Best Cadet going to Cpl Aaron Powel, Best Recruit to Cdt Alex Dawes, Best Shot to Cpl Aaron Powel, OC’s Award to Cdt Georgia Brown and finally some well-deserved promotion including Cpl Joe Lund to Sarjent. It is a great opportunity to thank everyone for all that they do for the contingent throughout the year and the formality of the occasion always makes it feel very special.
For many cadets, the most exciting part of CCF is the training days and camps. This year saw a first for our contingent, with a training day at Nesscliffe for the entire senior contingent, a total of 65 cadets. The day was spent on a four stand rotation: Assault course; DCCT; combat first aid
