wounded by a cannon ball, dying shortly afterwards. He was buried on the march by his mourning troops. I particularly love this object because I feel it repre- sents so much about the spirt of The Rifles – triumph in the face of adversity, ingenuity, skill and deter- mination. I also feel that it commemorates a great Rifleman, who did so much to make the Regiment
what it is today.

As we approach Remembrance Day, my favourite piece in the museum is the Memorial Cross built in a Patrol Base in Afghanistan to commemorate Lt. Andrew Chesterman. Visitors to the museum often ask how the Regiment can remember their fallen whilst on operations and this Memorial Cross, built from pallets, shows visitors the importance given to Remembrance by those on tour.
This Cross would have been in the Patrol Base as a reminder of the sacrifices made by others. Different Regiments serving in the same Patrol Bases would have added their own brass plaques to Memorial Crosses such as this one, however this one only has Lt. Andrew Chesterman’s plaque on, which is how it came to The Rifles Museum. Other Crosses have gone to other museums and memorial sites across the UK.
