                                    the Royal Sussex Regiment and served during the Second World War as a Brigade Commander in North Africa. He was further decorated with the DSO.
The town of Odiham, where Manley James was born, did the occasion proud: The Lord Lieutenant, Nigel Atkinson Esq attended and unveiled the paving stone; 4 RIFLES provided an Officer and Five with the Bugler coming from the Band and Bugles in Winchester. Both Major General Robin Grist and Brigadier Simon Plummer MBE spoke at the reception after the ceremony attended by members of the James family, the Gloucestershire Regimental Association, the local Royal British Legion and members of the town.
A national competition was held to design the commemorative paving stones, Charlie MacKeith, a London-based architect was the winner. His design features on the paving stones at both the Arboretum and around the UK.
The Buckinghamshire Surge
The Buckinghamshire Surge will take place at 26 September until 3 October 2018. The lead is being taken by 7 RIFLES, with 5 RIFLES and the Associ- ations in support. The aim is to provide backing to a recruiting main effort targeting the youth of the county with tailored events held in Milton Keynes, Aylesbury and High Wycombe.
The morning of Tuesday 23 October 2018 will see the VC commemoration for Lt Col Harry Greenwood VC late Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (KOYLI), This will be one of the last VC stones to be unveiled in the programme which has run for the past four years. The Antecedents Regiments of The Rifles hold 49 VC’s, 14 alone being awarded in 1918. The ceremony will take place at the Memorial Gardens (adjacent to Victoria Barracks), Bachelors Acre, Windsor. The ceremony is being organised by the Civic Team Manager, Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.
This will swiftly lead into the busy Remembrance Day events where the Band and Bugles along with the Regular and Reserve Battalions will parade and attend ceremonies paying tribute to the fallen in Freedom towns and cemeteries all over the region.
