Remembrance
Durham City’s Remembrance Service and Parade held on Sunday 8 November 2017 was one of the biggest for years, thanks to Arthur Lockyear, a retired fireman and D Rifles Company 8 Rifles. Arthur was the main man in Sunderland for 20 years when it came to organising the biggest Remembrance parade outside of London. Circum- stances brought Arthur to Durham City and over the past four or five years, the City parade has grown significantly in numbers.
The parade led by The Rifles who were led by the Durham Army Cadet Forces Band and Bugles who provided a magnificent display of Military music were followed by many other regiments from far and wide and especially ITC Catterick and the ITB’s Foot Guards and Paras. There was also three Cavalry Regiments, Royal Dragoon Guard, Light Dragoons (Northern Cavalry) Royal Lancers.
The Corps were represented by the RA, REME and Royal Military Police and others. Those marching by heavy drill were led by the Pipes & Drums of the Royal Dragoon Guards. The Civilian Emergency Services were strongly represented by Durham & Darlington Fire and Rescue Services, Durham Constabulary and Prison Services and they were joined by the Nursing profession. This contingent was led by the Durham Constabulary Brass Band. The Fire Services and Standards from Scotland, Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, London, Greater Manchester, South Wales, Essex, Herefordshire and many other areas were on parade to show their respect.

the march past at 1130 hrs. The salute was taken by HM’s Lord Lieutenant County Durham, Mrs Sue Snowdon and the Mayor of Durham. There was a massive cheer for all HM’s Armed Forces, Emergency Services and the Veterans of The Durham Light Infantry from the massive crowd in Durham City Centre Market Place.
The uniform of the Napoleonic period of the 68th Light Infantry was paraded alongside the traditional full-dress uniform of two DLI Chelsea In-Pensioners, one being Korea Veteran Arthur Teasdale.
