The Annual Remembrance Service
York Minster
Once again, the service was conducted by Andrew Martlew in his inimitable style. The attendance continues to grow; we have long outgrown the confines of The Rifles Chapel and now fill the east end of the Minster. This year’s guests included Lord Lieutenants, the Regional Colonel, CO 8 RIFLES, our Freedom Town Mayors and Armed Forces Champions. The lunch after the service was taken at York Racecourse which proved popular. Discussions about times gone by, who did what to who and the current cost of beer ensured a very enter- taining afternoon.
DISCUSSIONS ABOUT TIMES GONE BY, WHO DID WHAT TO WHO AND THE CURRENT COST OF BEER ENSURED A VERY ENTERTAINING AFTERNOON
Yorkshire’s Redcoats to Rifleman is a newly produced and colour- fully illustrated 24 page Short History of the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and
its successors in Yorkshire.
It traces the continuum of the Regiment from the formation of the 51st of Regiment
of Foot in Leeds in 1755, through The Light Infantry to the present-day regiment, The Rifles and is a ready reference for both the heritage of the Regiment and its current presence in Yorkshire.
The Rifles Regional Office – Pontefract
The Office happily is no longer alone. Y Company of 8 RIFLES have now taken up residence in Minden House and we now look, at least, a busier location. The aspiration is still to act as a focal point for Riflemen Past, Present and future in the North & Midlands.
The Rifles Regional Colonel, Brigadier Charlie Collins, continues to provide the impetus to strengthen links between the five pillars of The Rifles, a task becoming easier as 8 RIFLES gains in strength.
Victoria Cross Centenary Commemorations
It has been an inspiring time as we commemorate the recipients in our antecedent Regiments of the Victoria Cross with the unveiling of Centenary Stones, seven in the area covered by Pontefract. In chronological order the services were:
Each of the services was attended by representa- tives of The Rifles and the relevant Association. All were conducted in accordance with the families wishes, so each was unique and very poignant.
