YEARS OF PLANNING BY ANDREW PENNY, DAVID WROE AND THEIR TEAM PAID OFF IN A FANTASTIC DAY. THOSE WHO WERE THERE WILL NEVER FORGET THE OCCASION
were given by Andrew Penny and Tim Humphries. Buglers sounded the Last Post and Association standards were lowered. The standards of all the Association branches were on parade. A local band provided music, and to their credit they learnt and played faultlessly “With Jockey to the Fair”. Wreaths were laid by Eddie Robinson for the Regiment, by the Mayor of Doncaster for Doncaster Metro- politan Borough Council, by Percy Potts for the Norwegian Embassy and by the Mayor of Kirklees for Kirklees Metropolitan Borough Council, which of course includes Dewsbury and Batley. Many of those unable to attend may remember Percy Potts - who spent an enormous amount of time writing to potential donors and raising money. The ceremony was well covered by BBC local television, and by ITV’s programme “Calendar”
We then all moved to Doncaster racecourse for a buffet lunch including speeches of thanks from Andrew Penny and David Wroe. Some key pieces of regimental silver were on display and also drawings of the plans for the new Museum.
This brought to the end a truly memorable day, full of emotion and pride. Years of planning by Andrew Penny, David Wroe and their team paid off in a fantastic day. Those who were there will never forget the occasion and I hope that those who were unable to be there will get an idea of what happened from this description.
Colin Cranswick writes: It has been a busy 12 months in the Regimental Association Office and
during the same period a sad time, as the obituaries later in this publication will bear witness to the large number of members we have said our goodbyes to. Among them is KOYLI Band legend Bill Grainger sadly passed away in May aged 98 after a short illness – RIP brothers Cede Nullis.
The Associations Annual Minden Day Reunion was organised by Chairman of the Branches, Col (Retd) Gerry Delany and the Association Secretary Mr Colin Cranswick. The venue was held in the splendid surroundings of The Grove Hall in South Kirkby. 250 members and guests enjoyed an evening of entertainment which included a spectacular display by the Lt Div and Rifles Veteran Buglers Association. The official guests included the Mayor of South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council and the Armed Forces Champion from Wakefield MDC.
Association Standard Bearers and members have attended VC Centenary Stone unveiling ceremonies in Leeds, Norwich, Barnsley, Burnley and Salford for VC recipients from the KOYLI and forming Regiments of The Rifles.
In September, members and their partners enjoyed the day out at the All Services Remem- brance Parade held in Eden Camp, a modern history themed museum near Pickering. The KOYLI, LI, and RIFLES Regimental Standards, carried by: Stephen Drew, Robert Smith and Colin Cranswick took part in the Parade of Standards, the largest gathering in
