DMG (SE) Nordic Skiing
When I first received an email inviting me to participate in Roller Skiing in Keogh Barracks, I actually had to google what Roller Skiing was! Pulling on the boots and ski’s on the kerb on Keogh Parade Square felt completely alien, however, a few bumps, bruises and red faces later, the DMG (SE) team of 5 were excited to put our new skills into practice on the scenic grounds of Gala Resort, Norway.
The team had a range of experienced skiers who had competed before, intermediate skiers and I myself, the only novice.
Our two-week adventure began with a full day of travelling by cars, plane, train and minibus. Arriving at our warm picturesque chalet knee deep in snow felt like such a relief. Little did we know then, that this little chalet would become our safe haven after the gruelling and intense training sessions every day.
Our first week focused on Classic Nordic Skiing. We were separated in to groups according to our abilities and allocated an instructor. All the instructors were very highly skilled and experienced. Their patience and knowledge was second to none. Wearing the thin Lycra layers very quickly became apparent after a few laps of the training area. Our muscles ached, but our morale was kept high by the scenic views and gentle encouragement of the team.
In our spare time we kept ourselves fit with gentle runs in the morning and circuits at night. We also learned how to wax our skis’ properly and maintain our equipment. On our only day off, we were very fortunate to watch a competition for the
next Norway Ski Team. It was fascinating to watch the speed and skill of the professional skiers. Some were so physically exhausted that they collapsed at the finish line.
Our second week meant we had to hire boots and skis for skating. This definitely required a lot more strength and technique, but I think everyone was impressed at how quickly we all picked it up. I personally found this style much more enjoyable as I found I had much more control and speed. It was using this style that we practiced the 5km relay loop.
At the end of our two-week Norwegian adventure, we competed in a 5km relay race in true military fashion. Our numbered vests were issued and our ski’s waxed. As everyone was lined up at the start line, as few anxious glances were exchanged. The race ended with a huge sense of achievement, and of course a group photo. There are many opportunities throughout the year to develop Nordic Skiing skills. Two of the girls from the team have already planned to progress onto an Instructors course. The success of this exercise has got the team excited and hope to compete in the upcoming AMS Ski Championships 2016. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the QA Association for the contribution to funding this event.

Bi-Nursing Services Tennis Tournament 2015
The Bi-Nursing Services Tennis Tournament 2015 was held at RAF Halton Thurs 10 Sep.
After a successful win by the QA’s in 2014 after a long 10 year reign by the RAF, we were keen to defend out title. I am pleased to say this was done in extreme style, totally dominating the RAF winning four out of the five matches! We were delighted to see two new players representing the QA’s this year Lt Scott – DMG (S) and Pte Middlemiss DMG (SE) who did a sterling job of winning the Ladies Doubles. Other champions included Pte Gama – DMG (N)
– men’s singles winner, Lt Col Grieves RRC – 2 Med X and Lt Roberts – DMG (SE) mixed doubles winners and Lt Scott in her second match – Ladies singles winner. I would like to thank the Col Comdt and our avid fans for their encouraging cheers and supporting the event and we will look forward to repeating the victory in 2016!
