Page 7 - GuardII+ Series 4208 Platform SM User Manual
P. 7
Introduction
NOTE:
A GuardII+ SM card is a component of larger system, and requires a
GuardII+ Platform to function. GuardII+ SM cards are not compatible with
original GuardII monitors and original GuardII SM cards are not compatible
with GuardII+ monitors.
NOTE:
A GuardII+ monitor can only support one SM card, although that card may
include other monitoring technologies.
1. Introduction
1.1. Application
The GuardII+ SM card is an optional add-on for the GuardII+ continuous on-line monitor
that is used to measure shaft voltages and currents in rotating machines such as turbo
generators, hydro generators, compressors and motors; this is referred to as Shaft Monitoring
or ‘SM’ throughout this manual.
On-line measurements require the permanent installation of grounding brushes on the
shaft of the machine in addition to current shunts for monitoring shaft current. The sensor
outputs are connected to a termination box that converts the signals for use with the SM card.
A GuardII+ monitor with an SM card will automatically run measurements, store results,
and provide notification when an alert status is detected. The measurement data can be
manually downloaded, and measurement details can be automatically transmitted with
Modbus over TCP/IP protocol.
NOTE:
An SM card may also contain additional connections for monitoring
magnetic flux and/or endwinding vibration.
This manual only contains detailed information on the GuardII+ SM
monitoring; for details concerning the GuardII+ Platform, a different
monitoring technology or sensor installations, refer to the Manuals for
those components.
1.2. Features
