Each ship tried to offer
something so special that you
would remember it and return
for your next cruise. There
was always a huge selection
of fancy cakes, and often a
watermelon carved so that it
was the face of a person or a
fantastic flower. There were
ice carvings of exceptional
beauty. You wondered where
they found such talented
artists among the crew
members to produce these
amazing decorations.
The buffet also featured main
course dishes in case you had
enjoyed an early dinner and
needed something more by
midnight. Anything from a
decorated whole roast pig to
lobster and pasta dishes was
apt to be presented. There
was always a wide display
of cheeses and crackers, and
cold meats of all varieties.
Now was the perfect time
to sample those bits of blue
cheese, goat cheese, creamy
brie or camembert with a few
varieties of salami, ham or
prosciutto and some crackers.
The library is the other
most missed feature of
past cruises. Many ships
offered a selection of a
thousand or more books.
There were travel books
and maps, as well as several
best-selling novels and old
classics. Holland America
had the largest library, with
soft leather lounge chairs
that invited you to sit and
enjoy a book. All this has
disappeared now, and a
small rack of books has been
demoted to a seldom used
corner on their upper deck.
Celebrity ships still have a
designated library area with
comfortable chairs and lines
of mostly empty shelves
– offering a quite limited
choice of books among cast
off encyclopedias, donated
paper backs, and many novels
in foreign languages left by
former European passengers.
Once there was a librarian
to check out books for a $25
charge on your shipboard
credit – refunded when the
book was returned. Most
passengers now bring their
own choice of paper backs
or electronic readers. Only
Cunard’s three Queen liners
retain a formal library on two
decks joined by a circular
staircase, and a librarian to
assist if you need help. Ah,
for the good old days!
Shipboard photographers
have, for the most part, gone
the way of the midnight
buffet and library. They still
offer formal portrait shots for
the dressy evenings, as well
as candid photos taken in the
dining room and on shore
when in port. Some ships
print and post the pictures
for sale in large racks along
one passageway, while other
lines offer viewing on a
computer with the option to
print and purchase any you
select. Prices have increased
considerably over the years
from $5 for a small photo
to a multi-photo page that
ranges in price from $25 and
up. Most passengers use
their personal cell phones
and inexpensive cameras
to take all of the scenic and
“selfie” pictures they desire.
Everything keeps changing
and becoming “new and
improved” in spite of the fact
that we were happy with the
way things were. So it goes!
