                                       APPLICATIONS OF EQUATIONS AND INEQUALITIES

                                                        OBJECTIVES

✓ Explains ratio and proportion and shows properties of proportion and solves
                          real life problems.
✓ Solves real life problems by using equations and inequalities.

                         RATIO AND PROPORTION
                                  a
The ratio of a to b is (b 0) and can also be expressed as a:b or a b .
                                  b
An equation that equates two ratios or rates is called a proportion. Therefore, if b 0 and d 0 , then
                a c
                   is a proportion.
                b d

                                                         a
                       Ratios can be written in a variety of ways: , a:b, a b, b 0 
                                                         b

Example: A teacher graded 180 bonus quizzes during the school year. The number of quizzes receiving
A’s, B's, and C's were in the ratio of 5 : 3 : 1, respectively. Find the number of bonus quizzes that
received a grade of A for the school year.

               Solution:

               Problems:

               1) A soccer team played 25 games and won 17.
               a. What is the ratio of the number of wins to the number of loses?

               b. What is the ratio of the number of games played to the number of games won?

               2) Two numbers are in a ratio of 5 : 3. Their sum is 80. Find the largest number.
