For the past five years, my work has consisted of painting
portraits of young men and women who are my contempo-
raries, who are close to me and share the same way of life -
most of them are also artists. The paintings are chosen from
a cascade of snapshots of friends moving through life - obli-
vious, absorbed, daydreaming, fun loving, and extrovert.
Recently. I have pushed the concept further putting the
figure or figures center stage, larger than life, face to face
with the observer. Each photograph is chosen for its visual
impact or intrinsic energy. The paintings, frozen in space and
time, exacerbated by the anonymous white backgrounds,
show tension. The eyes stare out of the canvas at the obser-
ver with no sign of recognition, the soul is mute, elusive, a You making at mei1 a,rylic on canvas, I 50,10001, 200i
refusal to give more than the observer wishes to perceive.
