What are some serious problems in the part of Mozambique where he is from?
For Feliciano dos Santos, a guitar is an excellent weapon in the fight against disease. Along
with his band, Massukos, Santos plays music to educate people about how personal hygiene!
helps to prevent illness. In fact, one of the band’s greatest hits is Tissambe Manja, which means
“Wash Our Hands.”
Santos performs in some of the poorest, most remote? villages of his home country,
Mozambique. His songs provide information and motivation for villagers. He uses traditional
music, rhythms, and local languages to get his message across.
Santos has focused his efforts on Niassa, the part of
Mozambique where he is from. He has not forgotten the
challenges of growing up there. In Niassa, there AY

diseases, including polio. As a child, Santos —Feliciano dos Santos
had polio, and he knows how it feels to be
ill. He also knows that many of the people
are too poor to travel for medical care. ' V Feliciano dos Santos
In addition to performing, Santos works
on projects to improve sanitation.? Thanks
to Santos, there are now water pumps and
low-cost, environmentally friendly toilets in
many villages. It wasn’t easy to make these
changes, but the project was effective
enough to provide Niassa with a basic
sanitation system. Santos's projects have
been so successful that they now serve as
models for other development programs
around the world.
