The Indian film industry has been an important part of Indian cultural life for
many years. The center of the industry, nicknamed Bollywood, is located in Mumbai
(formerly Bombay). Bollywood, where mostly Hindi language films are made, makes
over 1000 films a year. These days, the films are enjoyed by people around the world.
In the past, the movies were set in India and included singing and dancing, acting,
romance, and always a happy ending. This type of film, mixing all of these elements
together, was called masala. In Hindi this means a mixture of spices.
Modern times brought changes. Large numbers of Indians were living in other
places: Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Australia, Europe, and North America. In the late
1990s, when new technology was developing, Bollywood filmmakers realized they
could make films for this diaspora! with satellite television, DVDs, and the Internet. The
films were made with modern life in mind. The main characters were often Indians
living outside their country. The films were shot where these Indians lived and in
India. The new films were a bit different from masalas, but still about Indian values and
traditions.

Bollywood films have had a powerful effect on the Indian diaspora. Even for Indians
living far away, the films connect them to their homeland. Thanks to Bollywood, there is
now a stronger sense of identity and community among Indians all over the world.
