1 READ the article about the debate over animals from the past. What is the main question
in this debate?
Woolly mammoths, saber-toothed cats. These animals went extinct! thousands of years ago.
Today, more animals continue to go extinct, and every year the number increases. Scientists wish
they could change the situation. Some of them would like to bring extinct animals back to life.
Experiments with a few species of birds and frogs suggest that this might be possible someday.
Is it a good idea to revive? extinct animals? Some people say yes, but others don’t agree.
The Argument for Revival
Reviving some species could help the environment. Consider, for example, the woolly mammoths.
They lived on grass-covered land in Siberia, Russia, 12,000 years ago. However, after mammoths
disappeared, the land turned into tundra.? Not many plants can grow there now. If large numbers
of mammoths were brought back, they could improve the land. Scientists would also benefit. If
researchers could study a large variety of revived animals, they would learn a lot; and much of
the information could be used to help living species.
The Argument against Revival
Natural habitats change over time. Would animals survive if they were revived? Would they
die without their old habitats? Would they be a danger to creatures living in those regions
now? Perhaps they would be harmed by hunting or pollution and die out again. In addition, if
scientists focused on extinct species, they might not have time to spend on living species.
There are still many
questions about extinct
species revival. Even if
scientists had more
answers, people would
continue to debate the
issues.
1 extinct: no longer living
? revive: bring back to life
8 tundra: treeless flat land found
mostly in the Arctic Circle
