English prepositions

In grammar, a preposition is a word which is used before a noun, a noun phrase or a
pronoun, connecting it to another word. In the sentences:

"We jumped in the lake"
"Many shops don't open on Sundays."

"in" and "on" are prepositions

Generally speaking one can classify prepositions in three groups:
prepositions of time
prepositions of place
other kinds of prepositions.

   1) Preposition of Time:
We use many different prepositions for talking about time. For example,

On - Weekend (American - What did you do on the weekend?
                  English)

             - months / seasons / year - I                                     visited

             - morning / evening /        Italy in July, in spring, in 1994.

In afternoon                              - In the evenings, I like to relax.

             - period of time             - This is the first cigarette I've

                                          had in three years.

At           - Night                      - It gets cold at night.

             - weekend          (British - What did you do at the weekend?
