TAIWAN SPCA BI-MONTHLY NEWSLETTER APRIL 2017
TSPCA recently received a cruelty report regarding an elderly macaque. It had been kept as a pet legally, years ago from a young age. That was when Taiwan had no laws to protect wild animals or endangered species. Afterwards,
his owner moved to China and left the animal behind and his neighbor took in the macaque. The new owner only provided a small iron cage for the animal but fed him a healthy diet consisting of corn and fruit. The average life span for a Formosan Macaque is around 30-40 years, and we believe this macaque is to be at least 30 years old. After our investigation, we found that the owner is open to improving the animal’s living environment, but lacked the nancial means to do so. We also evaluated the animal’s age and his relationship with the owner, and found that the best option was to allow the owner to continue to care for him but improve the living standards. The animal was too old to be relocated and had been kept in captivity for too long to be released back into the wild. We started communicating with the owner and relevant authorities, and decided that we needed to build a bigger and better cage for the elderly animal so that he had more space to climb around in and was given a more comfortable resting area. We also taught the owner how to provide more enrichment activities for the macaque.
The new cage will be four times larger than the current one, with more climbing platforms. The bottom will be covered with wood panels instead of metal. We will also attach tarp on the four sides of the cage so that it can be rolled down during bad weather. We want to thank “Tree House Interior Renovation and Design Company" for helping us create a 3D model of the new cage. Many endangered animal are still being kept legally by people in Taiwan and we suspect many are living in poor conditions, therefore, we are working with authorities all across Taiwan to investigate and provide assistance to these animals.
