PANAMA LA VIEJA
Archaeological site where it was located in Panama City since it's founding in 1519 until 1671. The city was moved to a new location , some 10 km southwest , to be destroyed in an attack by English pirate Henry Morgan , at the beginning of the decade 1670. From the original city, considered as the first European settlement on the Pacific coast of America, are today several ruins that make up this archaeological site.
Opposite the old Plaza Mayor are the ruins of the cathedral ; whose tower, 30 meters high, it is unusually located next to the apse. Originally made of wood, the cathedral was rebuilt with stronger materials, between 1619 and 1626. The ruins of the tower were intervened architecturally to allow visitors to use it as a lookout .
