CANAL DE PANAMA
The Panama Canal is an inter-oceanic navigation route between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean that crosses the Isthmus of Panama at its narrowest point, whose length is 65 km. There are locks on each end to lift boats up the Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of work required for the excavation of the canal, 26 meters above sea level, then down to the level of the Pacific or the Atlantic.
Since it's opening on August 15, 1914, it has managed to shorten time and distance maritime communication, boosting the economic and comercial exchange by providing a relatively cheap path between the two oceans and decisively influencing patterns of world trade, driving economic growth in developed countries and on way of developing, in addition to providing the basic impetus for economic expansion in many remote regions.
