Note: Conoscere and sapere both correspond to the verb “to know,” but they have different
meanings. Sapere means “to be aware of,” “to have knowledge of (facts),” “to find out.” When
sapere is followed immediately by an infinitive, it means “to know how” or “can” (see the
second example). Sapere may be followed by the preposition di before an infinitive, in which
case it means “to know” (see the fourth example below).
EXAMPLES
Sai dove sono andati? Do you know where they went?
Non so nuotare. I can’t (don’t know how to) swim.
Come avete saputo che lei si è sposata? How did you find out that she got married?
So di aver ragione. I know I’m right.
