Note: When sentire is used with ci it means “to be able to hear” (see the second example
below). Sentire requires no preposition before an infinitive (see the first and third examples
below). As a reflexive verb sentirsi (“to feel”) uses the reflexive pronouns mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si, as
well as the auxiliary verb essere, to form compound tenses (see the sixth example below).
EXAMPLES
Non l’ho mai sentito dire una parola. I haven’t ever heard him say a word.
Non ci sento bene. I can’t hear very well.
Aveva sentito parlare bene di lui. She had heard very good things about him.
Ho sentito che vai in Canada. I heard you are going to Canada.
Come vi sentite? How do you feel?
Mi sento triste. I feel sad.
