Note: When tenere is used with the pronoun ci (tenerci), it means “to value,” “to care about”
(see the fourth example below). As a reflexive verb tenersi (“to hold oneself/each other”) uses
the reflexive pronouns mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si, as well as the auxiliary verb essere, to form com-
pound tenses (see the last example below).

Teneva le mani in tasca. He kept his hands in his pockets.
Ci tengo al tuo parere. I value/care about your opinion.

Si tenevano per mano. They were holding each other’s hand.
