Chapter 6
A Surprise Call from Barbados.
Unexpectedly, one day in 1987, I had a call from Peter Boos: who said that, for various personal reasons both he and David Callaghan wished to step away from Rockley and sell their shares: would I like to buy them? I came over to Barbados and did just that, at the price proposed. I was confident that all would be fair and square, coming from Peter; as expected, it proved to be just that.
Almost immediately following Peter and David’s exit in 1987, I was approached by BS & T, then the largest group of Companies in Barbados. BS & T had become 20% shareholders in the Rockley project around the time when our early partners, Peter Brown and Dick Hobday left the Company. Now their present Chairman, Sir Douglas Lynch, QC, proposed that B S & T , should take control of the Hotel company at Rockley , and explained to me how that would work : they would take over 80% of the hotel side of the operation (Rockley Resort Hotel and its parent Rockley Recreations Ltd) and I would take over 80% of the development company, Rockley Country Club Ltd.
I was happy to agree to Sir Douglas’s proposal.
As regards the continuation of Rockley Country Club Ltd, (the development company), I then agreed a deal with The Barbados Mutual Life Assurance Company who became my 0/0 partner in the develop- ment of the balance of the designated development or “cluster” lands . Thus we built the “Four Square” cluster, which consists of 40 x bedrooms Town Houses: the arrangement being that I would look after the sales/ marketing side of things - and they would see after the construction of the cluster. Sadly, the “Four Square” cluster proved to be the only direct loss making cluster in the entire project, with the builder finally bringing it to completion well over a year late and well over budgeted cost and my joint venture with the BMLAS came to an end, leaving just one small cluster for me to develop, this time, entirely on my own.
But not quite as another fortunate coincidence was about to happen.
