Before Jamini found his own artistic idiom and turned to depiction of bengali subjects, he dabbled for a few initial years exploring christian motifs. Paintings from this early period of Jamini's career are rare and highly prized, such as this one.
A painting of impressive size, this work came to my collection in 2020 from a prominent private collector in Kolkata whose family had sourced the work directly from Jamini Roy's son Dharmadas Roy in the 1980s. The work was also personally authenticated and certified by eminent art historian Sandip Sarkar as well as by Jamini Roy's grandson Debabrata Roy at the time of the sale.
