小補充
節錄《白玉雕牛》(The White Jade Ox )英文版:
The young man exchanged a few words with the doorman, and they decided to
invite the old man to sit inside.
“Sir, you’re often sitting around here. Is there anything you want? Tell us, may-
be we can do something for you.”
There was a trace of joy in the old man’s face, but he kept staring at the floor.
After a long while, he broke the silence.
“I’m here to see my ancestors and my father,” he said.
This simple response caught the two man by surprise.
“See your ancestors?”
“Yes.” said the old man.
“Your father? I mean, does he live here?” asked the young man.
“Oh, that was thirty years ago.”
The doorman and the young man glanced at each other and after exchanging a
few words in Mandarin, they agree to go on.
“Sir, how old are you?”
“Eighty-two.”
“How many children have you got?”
“Three boys, two girls.”
“Where do you live?”
“Shi-pai, but my father used to own this stretch of land. From here to the street
over there—this whole stretch was our paddies.”
The young man turned to the doorman and spoke to him in Mandarin for a
while. A few things seemed to dawn on him.
