FORMULATION:
Each uncoated tablet contains:
Betahistine Hydrochloride …… 24 mg
DESCRIPTION:
Betahistine is an antivertigo drug first used for treating vertigo associated with Ménière's
disease. It is also commonly used for patients with balance disorder.
INDICATION:
It is used to reduce the symptoms of vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss associated with Meniere’s
Disease
MECHANISM OF ACTION:
It has a direct stimulating (agonistic) effect on H1 receptors located on blood vessels in
the inner ear. This would give rise to local vasodilation improving blood flow in the inner
ear, thereby lowering the buildup of pressure which causes vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing
loss and it also increases its permeability, which would help reverse the underlying
problem of endolymphatic hydrops.
It acts by reducing the asymmetrical functioning of sensory vestibular organs as well as
by increasing vestibulocochlear blood flow.
PHARMACOKINETICS: Betahistine is rapidly and completely absorbed after oral administration
from the gastro-intestinal tract (GIT). It has a Half-life of 3-4 hrs.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
Adults: The usual adult initial dose is 24 mg, twice daily, later reduced to 16 to 24 mg daily
for maintenance, depending on patient response. The dosage should be individually
adapted according to the response. Maximum efficacy is obtained with long periods of
treatment of 3-8 weeks.
DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Although an interaction between Betahistine and antihistamines could be expected on a
theoretical basis, no such interactions have been reported.
