Most synthetic fibers can be produced in essentially endless lengths. Simply by
eliminating the need to overlap short, discontinuous lengths of fiber within the
twisted yarns, synthetic fibers produce ropes that are lighter and smaller in
diameter than natural fiber ropes for a given strength. And since synthetic fibers
are themselves stronger than natural fibers, even lighter weights and smaller
