Yitzchak Rabin – the man who became a symbol, when he
was murdered on November 4th, 1995

Yitzchak, whom everyone just called “Rabin”, was born in 1922. A year

later his family moved to Tel Aviv, and there he grew up.

At a very young age of 16, he was a member of the Hagana, and was
active against the British who ruled the land of Israel and didn’t allow

Jews to immigrate to the country.

Rabin was among the people who built up the ‘Palmach’ – the informal
army of the Jews in the land of Israel before 1948. Rabin was a
commander in Palmach and fought with his soldiers in the Negev and in
             Jerusalem against the Arab armies.

When the war was over, Rabin was only 27. He wanted to study in

university but felt he needed to help the young State of Israel, so he chose
to continue in the army. Rabin was the Chief of Staff during the Six Day
War and became an admired man in Israel and in the world.

In the 70s he was elected to be the Prime Minister of Israel for the first
time, and in the 90s he was elected for the second time.

As Prime Minister, Rabin signed a peace agreement with Jordan, and the
             Oslo agreement with the Palestinians.

From being a man of war Rabin turned to be a man of peace, and gave
hope to a lot of people.

On the other hand, there was criticism against Rabin, because of

Palestinian terror, because of which many people were killed in the heart
of Tel Aviv, and also because of Rabin’s wish to give territories in Judea
             and Samaria to the Arabs.

The criticism was so big, that there were people who thought that Rabin
should be stopped. Rabin’s supporters organized a big demonstration
named “Yes to peace and No to violence”.

At this demonstration Rabin was murdered, and Israel was in great
             mourning.
